Unrestricted by constraints of the client, the architect is free to pursue a more personal vision, & develop ideas that convention might resist. So it is here. While clearly demonstrating his mastery of space, light & orientation, Van Pelt boldly adapts the form of Mexican colonial architecture to living in a California garden. It is still today a surprise & delight! Sited behind a gated private drive, the acre plus grounds consist of three separate parcels incorporating mature gardens, a small stone guest house, plus a studio/workshop. Constructed of masonry, the unique plan of the Van Pelt residence includes a well scaled living room with high ceilings and a fireplace, dining room that opens through French doors to the garden patio, a multi-use enclosed breezeway and attached carports.
