“No house should ever be on the hill…. It should belong to the hill.” Frank Lloyd Wright’s dictum, brilliantly expressed at Fallingwater, is well embodied in the Reed Residence in Malibu. O.P & Rosemary Reed commissioned O.P’s brother, John Reed, A.I.A. to create a warm, organic modern design in harmony with nature. Accordingly, the house steps down the hillside, opening to the land on the east and dramatically cantilevering over the steeper western slope to capture views out to Pt. Dume. One flight down from entry, the main floor’s double-height living room with its redwood-paneled ceiling is a tour de force. That room opens to a large, cook’s eat-in kitchen; beyond are two bedrooms. The master suite is tucked behind the living room, yet open to the ocean via an east-facing patio. Above here is also an open art-room mezzanine. All orients to the ocean, sky and sun, while providing ample shelter and privacy.
