The property was the first commission of architect Eric Lloyd Wright (born 1929) and built for Wright’s brother Rupert Pole (1919-2006). Wright is the grandson of the famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) and son of master architect Lloyd Wright (1890-1978). The HCM nomination lists the property’s architectural style as International; however it appears to more closely exemplify Mid-Century Modern architecture, exhibiting many of the style’s character-defining features.
The property meets the criteria for HCM designation because it embodies the “distinguishing characteristics of an architectural-type specimen, inherently valuable for a study of a period style or method of construction,” as an example of International style residential architecture.
