Like a graft of a new stalk on old roots, Emily Jagoda’s architecture grows from historic California architectural precedent, yet blossoms with new fruit. Built in 2008 and for lease for the first time in many years is Jagoda’s own former residence, one of two residences on the same lot, and an elegant exercise in today’s Modernism. The entry level is an airy, light loft-like space opening to the garden patio, its concrete floors exuding radiant heat on cold nights. Two bedrooms and a bath are on the second level for children or guests, while the entire 3rd floor is reserved as master bedroom and bath for the owner, articulated with sculptural wooden paneling that recalls the early work of Gehry & others in the “L.A. Ten.” Careful siting & corner lot provide privacy between the two structures.
