Konrad Wachsmann & Walter Gropius

The General Panel Residence, 1950

Description

Since World War II, many architects with a social conscience have devoted their attentions to creating cost effective systems for modernist prefabricated housing. Most of these dreams have remained on the drawing boards. The General Panel system developed by Konrad Wachsmann & Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus, actually went into production. One of the last examples is offered here for the first time on a wooded lot in Nichols Canyon. Built by General Panel’s quality control architect Rudy Wolf for his own home, the residence includes: 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, and later guest quarters/studio with bath, all maintained as originally constructed.
