Wallace Neff, Architect

House for Albert & Mildred Gates, 1925

Description

Built during the golden age of Southern California architecture, Neff designed the residence in his self-described “Californian” style, blending Spanish, Tuscan and other Mediterranean Revival elements that were popular at the time. A simple, uncluttered façade at the street gives way to the rich details of the living and dining rooms, all with original arched windows and doors that open directly to the loggia. The generous-sized, landscaped lot with pool provides for large-scale entertaining, complete with sweeping vistas of the Rose Bowl and the San Gabriel Mountain Range. While the floor plan of the five bedroom, five bath residence is mostly intact from the original construction, some restoration will be required to return the overall program to a visual presentation that is worthy of the home’s significant place in Southern California history.
