Modern Living in a Park-Like Setting

Description

An archaic overhead street signal suspended over the intersection marks Chaney Trail. A block up the trail the vast insensible city sprawl abruptly ends. Stress withers as one passes the old Nuccio’s Nursery, turns on to the private drive, then into the residence parking area beneath mature oaks. Stepping out of the car the California ideal of living in nature begins anew. Always complementing Gordon’s early modernist vision of naturally integrating building with the site, the residence has organically evolved: Tim Andersen’s new entry and living space has expanded entertaining possibilities, as well as modern spatial expectations. Fung and Blatt, without obliterating the past, converted the now poolside stables into an ideal contemporary writers’ retreat, or guest bedroom and bath, winning AIA Award recognition. Together, the structures incorporate a master suite, two additional bedrooms, three baths, and generous open plan living space, all set carefully within the acre plus gardens. After consultations with Theodore Payne in 1962, one of the two lots has been reserved as a native plant garden.
