The Nowling Residence, 1962, James De Long, Architect: Arguably, Frank Lloyd Wright’s early work was the genesis of California’s celebrated open plan modern living. Apprentice and Taliesin Fellow James De Long embraces the tradition at the Nowling Residence. The entertainment living spaces are carefully defined by fine cabinetry and built-ins, but flow one to the other, and outdoors to the pool and gardens which are set in an old avocado grove. The home is sited for both privacy, and to afford panoramic views across the City to the Ocean. The beauty of the design is not just for show: wide eaves protect the interiors from the summer sun while allowing the low winter sun to warm the interiors. The master bedroom suite commands the entire second floor, while the two additional bed rooms with built-ins, two baths and laundry are worked into the first floor plan.
