The Cedric Belfrage House, 1937

Architectural historians Gebhard & Winter invented a new style (Monterey Moderne) to describe the character and warmth of this classic 1930’s residence by noted architects Barcume & King. As related to the current owner by Belfrage, a Hollywood writer and correspondent, he had the pick of sites when Firenze Avenue was first created. He chose a nearly 1/3 acre knoll-top lot, and was allowed to pick the address 7777. Privacy was assured with the street wrapping around the bottom of the knoll on three sides. Today, a circular pool set in a landscaped garden plays off the curving private drive leading to the attached two-car garage. The residence steps up from the parking plaza to allow for light and canyon vistas. Entry reveals a two-story open plan interior with the stairway dramatically ascending to the upper level. There are two bedrooms on the main level and two bedrooms on the second floor opening to a rooftop sleeping porch.
