The Robb Report Collection

Zen Dens

Written by Erika Heet

Whether your plans this season include excursions to the snow, the beach, or even the city, your options are more far-reaching than ever. In this month’s feature on great escapes (page 36), we offer a selection of new developments, ranging from beach resorts to ski destinations to desert hideaways, and provide you with the tools to choose the locations and amenities that bet suit your needs. If you’re heading to California this winter, the quiet, friendly ski town of Mammoth is now reachable with daily direct flights from Los Angeles throughout the ski months, and tempts with both gondola-close vacation residences and multimillion-dollar estates (page 18). If a peid-a-terre in the city is more your thing, check out our On the Market section (page 23) with New York developments by Karl Fischer and Herzog & de Menron, as well as a Ritz-Carlton in the heart of Montreal. Also, on the market are the Dalat villas, nestled deep in the peaceful valleys of the south-central highlands of Vietnam, an area referred to as ‘Le Petit Paris’. We visit one of the most important getaways ever built, architect John Lautner?s Elrod house (page 64), constructed for an interior designer in 1968 and still enjoyed by the few lucky enough to be invited over for a weekend fete.

Lautner created many retreats for private clients, mainly in Southern California, and a couple of those are up for grabs now. With the market dropping and even mid-century modern gems sitting for much longer than the sellers would like, now is the time to pounce on that architectural treasure you have always pined for. The historic two-bedroom redwood-and-glass Schaffer house in the Whiting Woods enclave of Glendale, California, was built in 1949 and sits in an old-growth redwood grove. It is available for $1.573 million through Crosby Doe (310-428-6755, www.architectureforsale.com). Consider it the perfect opportunity to snatch up your own little den – ideal for hibernating.
